Post Date:08/15/2024 12:08 PM

Junior Ranger High fiveMilton’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meets Thursday evening to discuss Milton residency and extreme weather guidelines for City-affiliated programs, among other matters.

The August 15 meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in City Hall’s Council Chambers. People can either attend in-person or watch online at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMwAEvAhRIo.

The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, also known as PRAB, consists of seven people appointed by Milton’s Mayor and individuals Councilmembers. This advisory body shares recommendations, insights, and advice on matters related to park facilities, recreational programs, certain City policies, and more.

Thursday’s meeting will begin, as is customary, with reports on Milton programs. These range from athletic and art programs run by City partners to recently concluded City-run summer camps to outdoor recreation programming.

The latter includes the Junior Rangers, a program that gives children (from 2nd through 6th grades primarily) the opportunity to explore, learn about, and come to love nature. The City recently held its first Junior Ranger Academy at various Milton parks. At Thursday’s meeting, some of the young people who went through that will take a pledge and earn a badge. To learn more about, and become part of, this program, go to www.miltonga.gov/JuniorRangers.

PRAB will then consider a potential partnership with an organization called Balance Kids to lead a new “Learn to Bike” program.

This will be followed by a discussion of what Milton residency requirements (if any) should be placed on travel teams affiliated with the City.

Spraying water Camp CompassThis will be followed by an introductory discussion on the Milton residency requirements placed on travel teams affiliated with the City. PRAB and staff members will look at ways to potentially modify those requirements.

After this, PRAB will talk about the development of an “extreme weather” policy – a set of guidelines for program providers using City fields when Mother Nature comes into play. This would add to the existing high heat policy to include things like what coaches should do if it is bitter cold, there is a nearby thunderstorm, or other extreme weather conditions.

Thursday’s meeting will end with City Staff reports on:

  • The 2024 Wall of Fame ceremony, which will be on a weekend day at the end of the fall season at Bell Memorial Park
  • The latest on the project to improve the parking situation at Legacy Park
  • Details on the City’s acquisition of 21.4 acres along Deerfield Parkway and efforts to turn that space into an active park

After Thursday’s meeting, PRAB is next scheduled to convene on September 19.
