Speed limits lowered to 40mph on Batesville, Hamby, Hickory Flat roads

Post Date:08/30/2024 8:44 AM
Batesville no truckSpeed limits on three more Milton roads officially dropped late this week – all part of ongoing efforts to make the city’s transportation network even safer.

New signage installed Thursday indicates maximum speeds of 40 mph (down from the previous 45 mph) on these roads:
  • Batesville Road (in west Milton)
  • Hamby Road (in northeast Milton)
  • Hickory Flat Road (in northwest Milton)

These speed limit reductions are reflected on the radar permit, meaning police can enforce them. All three roads extend to Milton’s borders – Cherokee County for Batesville and Hickory Flat roads, and Forsyth County in the case of Hamby Road.

Milton’s Local Road Safety Plan recommended looking at and potentially dropping speed limits to help prevent destructive accidents, preserve a serene rural feel, and generally make drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians feel safer. After the Plan’s August 2022 adoption, the City collected and reviewed data from roads around Milton to find ones suitable for lower speeds. That led to the first set of speed limit reductions going into effect earlier this year on Bethany Way plus parts of Freemanville and Providence roads. Earlier this summer, the City Council formally submitted for State review the proposed speed decreases on Batesville, Hamby, and Hickory Flat roads. The Georgia Department of Transportation and Georgia Department of Public Safety must approve such changes on public streets statewide for them to become officially part of the radar permit.

After that review was completed, the same Council gave its final approval for the reductions at its August 19 meeting. Since then, Milton’s Public Works Department has ordered and installed signs as well as made other necessary adjustments to implement the changes. Public Works Director Sara Leaders has indicated Milton will explore potentially lowering speeds on even more roads in the future.
