Design Review Board to get update on progress with key Deerfield plan

Post Date:11/04/2024 11:51 AM

#Samia and son looking at plansMilton’s Design Review Board on Tuesday will get an update and share thoughts about the Deerfield Implementation Plan – an in-the-works, dynamic, community driven vision for that important part of southeastern Milton.

The November 5 meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in City Hall’s Council Chambers. People can attend in person or watch online at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PDQScaiFyc.

The Design Review Board, often referred to as DRB, consists of seven individuals appointed by Milton’s Mayor and Councilmembers. This committee reviews proposals for new construction, new site development, and certain significant alterations to existing structures, in addition to being part of the public hearing process – meaning members may consider matters, like variance requests, that also go before other boards. The DRB votes on demolition requests, though none of these are on the November 5 agenda. For more information about this board and its members, go to https://www.miltonga.gov/government/boards-committees/design-review-board-drb/.

The DRB on Tuesday will have a courtesy review of a primary variance request related to 13210 Owens Way, a property in the Six Hills Owens Way Pool Cabananeighborhood. The applicant is seeking a variance to reduce the 25-foot minimum side yard setback requirement to 16.5 feet (from the north property line) for an accessory structure – specifically an open-air pool cabana that was built by the previous owner of the same property.

This will be followed by a discussion of the Deerfield Implementation Plan, which aims to be a purposeful guide to ensuring this area is an inviting, thriving, vibrant, uniquely Milton destination for residents and visitors alike. The City’s project team has been working for months to assess the realities, imagine possibilities, and craft a plan for Deerfield, which includes what’s around Highway 9, Windward Parkway, Webb Road, Deerfield Parkway, and Morris Road.

This effort includes extensive community outreach, such as asking people what designs, styles, and amenities they prefer for this area. Hundreds offered their opinions in person and online. On Tuesday, the Design Review Board will hear about the main takeaways from this engagement as well as share their own thoughts. Ultimately, the City hopes to produce a Design Manual that can guide development proposals (in addition to producing the full Deerfield Implementation Plan).

This meeting is the DRB’s second-to-last one of this year, with the other falling on December 3. Tuesday’s final agenda item looks forward beyond even that – specifically getting members’ weigh-in on a draft calendar of monthly meetings for 2025. Generally, the Design Review Board meets on the first Tuesday of every month.
