Smoke may rise in the comings days off Freemanville Road – though not on nights, Sundays, in the rain, or holidays – as a result of a permitted open burn using an “air curtain destructor.”
The controlled burn will happen at 14140 Freemanville Road, which is within both sides of Phillips Circle (across the road from where Summit and Redd roads hit Freemanville). The applicants have been granted permission by the Milton Fire-Rescue Department through sunset on January 11,
though they may be finished before then.
Permits are required to operate an “air curtain destructor,” which are tools designed to contain and minimize smoke, in Georgia. According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources - Georgia DNR's Environmental Protection Division, an air curtain destructor is "a forced air pit incinerator for the purpose of disposing vegetative waste and debris."
Moderate amounts of smoke could rise above the area in the morning; there should be less smoke later in the day as the pit temperature rises. In addition to prohibitions on nights and weekends, the “destructor” can’t be used if there’s abnormally high air pollution. And the holidays where it can’t be used coming up include Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day.
