***UPDATE*** The date for this class have been pushed back! It will now take place on April 12 (and not February 8). All the other details -- in terms of the description, timing, and how to register -- remain the same. What's below has been updated to reflect the latest information.
If you throw a backpack over your shoulders and hit the trail, are you really ready?
The City is offering a “Backpacking Basics” course early next month so you can enthusiastically answer “YES!” to that question. After you do, you’ll be equipped with knowledge on many levels to have a safe, positive trek into the wilderness.
To sign up, go to www.miltonga.gov, click the “Outdoor Recreation” tab, then go to “Outdoor Academy.” This class will be atop the list.
“Backpacking Basics” will run (or should it be, hike?) between 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 12. Among other things, attendees will learn
how to:
- Select and pack the right gear
- Plan trips through the great outdoors
- Navigate off-trail and on-trail (including trail etiquette)
- Set up camp like a pro, including picking a site and preparing food
- Stay safe, healthy, and hygienic while in nature
This class is open to anyone age 13 and over, whether you’re new to backpacking or a more seasoned hiker looking to enhance your skills – so whether you’re looking to spend the day exploring a place such as Birmingham Park or planning to conquer the Appalachian Trail. It will take place at the Community Center at Milton City Park and Preserve (1785 Dinsmore Road).
It’s part of our ever expanding Outdoor Recreation offerings spearheaded by “Ranger” Jen Young, the City’s Outdoor Recreation Supervisor. You can learn about the other possibilities (past, present, and future) at https://www.miltonga.gov/government/parks-rec/outdoor-recreation/.
