Kids can soon go fishin’ with Ranger Jen by joining one of her upcoming classes at Mayfield Park.
For a minimal $5 fee (to cover expenses), attendees from ages 8-to-14 will learn about the tools of fishing (hook, line, and rod included), how to use them, as well as what they can catch. Mayfield Park’s pond, for instance, contains largemouth bass, bluegill, and black crapple.
The upcoming session will be from 1-2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 8. To sign-up, go to https://secure.rec1.com/GA/city-of-milton/catalog?filter=c2VhcmNoPTMzOTY5ODY= then click on “Outdoor Academy.”
Future classes are planned for April 8 (4:30-6 p.m.) and June 28 (9:30-11 a.m.), with registrations for those now open as well at www.miltonga.gov/Registration.
No knowledge of fishing is required. Nor is a pole, as the City has some available that participants can use. An appreciation for nature, love of fishing, and good attitude, though, will serve you well.
These fishing classes are part of an evolving round-up of outdoor recreation opportunities offered through Milton Parks and Recreation. They’re spearheaded by Jen Young, a.k.a. “Ranger Jen,” the City’s Outdoor Recreation Supervisor who last fall was named the Georgia Recreation and Park Association’s Recreation Programmers Network Distinguished Professional of the Year.
Other offerings include the recently launched Wildlife 101 webinar series, thematic guided hikes, rafting and kayaking, and Adopt-a-Trail program. For details on those and other programs, visit https://www.miltonga.gov/government/parks-rec/outdoor-recreation.
