Few weeks left to file for homestead exemptions to reduce property taxes

Post Date:03/12/2025 9:39 AM

TAX RELIEF MILTON RESIDENTS.March 2025 graphicYou've got just a few more weeks to file for a homestead exemption -- or perhaps for more than one exemption.

The deadline to file for this tax year, in both the City of Milton and Fulton County, is April 1.

What's a homestead exemption? It's a way to reduce what you pay in property taxes to the City and, in some cases, to Fulton County as well. To qualify, property owners must own and occupy their home as primary residence as of January 1 of the applicable year.  Property owners already receiving exemptions do not need to reapply each year unless there is a change in ownership, or the owner is applying for a different exemption.

The following exemptions are offered by the City of Milton:

  • Basic Homestead Exemption: This amounts to $15,000 off the assessed value. (Apply through Fulton County.)
  • Veterans Exemption: This exemption amount is set annually by U.S. Veterans Administration. (Apply through Fulton County.)
  • Floating Homestead Exemption: This exemption caps the taxable value growth at the lower of 3% or CPI (Consumer Price Index, as set by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). (Apply through Fulton County.)
  • Senior Exemptions with Milton (Apply through the City of Milton)
    • The 65+ exemption is $25,000 off the assessed value, with no income requirement. Applicants must be 65 or older before January 1 of tax year.
    • The 70+ exemption is a full-value exemption and income based (as adjusted gross income on federal income taxes must be less than $100,000). Applicants must be 70 or older on or before January 1 of tax year.
    • The disability exemption is another full-value exemption that’s also income-based (adjusted gross income on federal income taxes must be less than $91,728) and requires proof of the disability.
