Milton Safety in Action Logo with cityAfter years of developing community-driven transportation improvement plans, the City is moving to the next phase of implementing elements of them – an initiative being called Safety in Action.

For information on this pivotal project, check out its new dedicated webpage: www.miltonga.gov/SafetyInAction.

Safety in Action utilizes $1 million in federal funding that Milton learned last fiscal year that it would receive through a Safe Streets for All (SS4A) grant. It will further specific initiatives aimed at making Milton roads safer for all users – namely drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

The project’s three core components are:

  • Assessing if there are physical obstacles that limit individuals with disabilities’ accessibility to, from, and within City-owned facilities (including buildings, parks and programs, and in the public right-of-way). If corresponding issues are identified, recommendations will be made to address them (funding for which, ultimately, could be considered as part of the City’s regular annual budget process).
  • Developing a toolbox of countermeasures that the City can deploy to improve operations and reduce crashes at roundabouts. Data will be collected at two roundabouts in particular – Hopewell Road at Bethany Bend and Hopewell Road at Thompson – to help inform this endeavor. Additional information will be gathered after pilot countermeasures are put in place.
  • Conducting road safety audits on Freemanville and Hopewell roads, which are the two main City-controlled north-south routes in Milton. This will involve collecting detailed data and exploring the addition of curve warnings – including creating a compliant curve warning sign plan – along these important corridors.

Just like with Milton’s transportation planning efforts, engaging with citizens will be a crucial part of Safey in Action. This will happen in the form of public outreach events, open meetings, and online engagement, including a Social Pinpoint webpage.
