BZA to consider variance requests tied to proposed home additions

Post Date:06/16/2025 2:51 PM

Birmingham Highway rendering Milton’s Board of Zoning Appeals is set to meet Tuesday evening to consider a pair of requests for variances from City Code to reduce minimum setbacks for additions.

The June 17 meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in City Hall’s Council Chambers (2006 Heritage Walk). Anyone can attend in-person or watch online at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7a6ZLKeYnP4.

The Board of Zoning Appeals is a quasi-judicial committee, often referred to as BZA, consisting of seven individuals appointed by Milton’s Mayor and Councilmembers. This Board hears requests for variances from City Code as well as appeals to City decisions related to zoning ordinances, stream buffers, and sign permits.

The first item on Tuesday’s agenda, after a vote to approve the “minutes” from BZA’s last meeting, relates to 1010 Lyndon Lane. The applicant for that property is expected to withdraw their request for a variance, however.

This will be followed by two primary variance requests that are expected to be taken up Tuesday.

The first pertains to 435 CHAMPIONS VIEW DRIVE in the Champions View neighborhood off Francis Road. The applicant is seeking to reduce the minimum setback for a side yard (to the east property line) from 25 feet to 15.2 feet for a proposed addition to an existing home.

Then BZA will consider a request from the owner of a 1-acre property at 15925 BIRMINGHAM HIGHWAY not far north of Birmingham Crossroads. Specifically, the applicant wants to reduce the minimum front-yard for an existing single-family home from 60 feet to 48.4 feet to allow a new home addition to be built.

After Tuesday’s meeting, BZA is next scheduled to convene on July 15.
