Morris Road is getting wider – though, in recent weeks, the focus has been as much what’s under the expanded roadway as what will be on the surface.
For most any transportation project of this scale, making sure stormwater flows in a manner that doesn’t impair traffic or leads to issues in surrounding areas is very important. The City’s contractor Wilson Construction Management is placing new inlet structures and reinforced concrete pipes to move the stormwater underneath the new roadway. You will currently see trenches being dug for this purpose. In addition, many utilities – such as AT&T, Zayo, Fulton County water and sewer, Verizon, and others – are being relocated.
There’s also plenty of earthwork going on. Bulldozers and other equipment are grading the area to better ensure proper water runoff and to get the new portions of the roadway to grade. And while they won’t be there long-term, silt fences, check dams, and other erosion control measures are now in place to prevent
sediment and runoff while construction is underway.
The advances made so far this summer are just some of the elements of the broader project. It involves widening Morris Road between Webb Road and Bethany Bend (with a landscaped median included), as well as adding turn lanes, a 10-foot-wide multi-use trail, sidewalks and curb and gutter. We appreciate citizens’ patience and understanding as, yes, there’s a possibility of delays anytime construction crews are working on or alongside a road. Long-term, the goal is to improve safety for drivers and pedestrians, as well as help traffic flow especially with the also-under-construction new McGinnis Ferry/GA 400 interchange. IMPORTANT note: That 400 interchange project, which is being done by the Georgia Department of Transportation, is separate from the City’s Morris Road widening project.
