Potential new youth dance, cupcake decorating programs on PRAB agenda

Post Date:07/16/2025 11:07 AM

#cupcakesMilton’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meets Thursday to discuss a possible new youth dance program as well as one in which participants learn to decorate delicious, good-looking cakes and cupcakes.

Those are among the topics for the agenda of the July 17 meeting, which will begin at 6 p.m. in City Hall’s Council Chambers (2006 Heritage Walk). People can attend in-person or watch online at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFATLrWuOqM.

Also known as PRAB, Parks and Recreation Advisory Board members share their insights and opinions with City staff and leaders on needs, wants, and policies pertaining to Milton parks and recreational programs. You can learn more about its makeup and mission at https://www.miltonga.gov/government/boards-committees/parks-and-recreation-advisory-board/.

As usual, Thursday’s meeting will begin with approving the “minutes” (or official written record) from PRAB’s last meeting followed by “Committee Reports.” The latter is an opportunity to hear the latest on Parks and Rec-affiliated programs including for the arts, outdoor recreation, adults, and athletics (such as baseball, lacrosse, and swimming).

The first New Business item relates to one beloved program in particular, the Junior Rangers. Led by Outdoor Recreation Supervisor Jen Young, the Junior Rangers provides engaging opportunities for young people to explore, learn, and love nature in Milton. (You can learn all about it at www.miltonga.gov/JuniorRangers.) After going through the program, Junior Rangers can earn badges and be sworn in – with the newest group of them set to do just that on Thursday night.

Ballet Feet VerticalThen the Board will consider a pair of potential new recreation program partnerships with the City. If ultimately approved, these providers would run classes, camps, and other activities out of Milton facilities, with residents paying discounted rates.

The first is Little River Ballet, which could become Parks and Rec’s new youth dance program offering creative movement, ballet, and contemporary dance classes for those from 3- to 10-years-old.

PRAB will then discuss a partnership with Karen B Cakes, run by a licensed baker from Milton, to lead culinary cake and cupcake decorating classes and workshops out of City facilities.

The agenda’s final “New Business” item is small revision to the official rules and procedures for those (including recreation programs) using Milton parks.

Parks and Rec staff then will share updates with PRAB on several topics, starting with the Wall of Fame. The Wall is a place in Bell Memorial Park honoring exemplary individuals who got their start or made their mark in Milton through parks and recreation-related activities. The names of those in its seventh class should be revealed this coming fall. For more information, visit www.miltonga.gov/WallOfFame.

Staff will then lead a discussion of field allocation for various athletic programs for the coming fall season.

The meeting’s last agenda item is an update on upcoming construction projects at two existing parks. Legacy Park’s parking lot, for example, is set to be reconfigured and expanded. Details can be found at https://cleargov.com/georgia/fulton/city/milton/projects/2503/legacy-park-parking-lot-improvements.

And in addition to the ongoing expanded trail and other work in its passive North Woods, work is planned to improve Milton City Park and Preserve’s active portion. This will involve redoing and adding what will amount to two more tennis courts (for a total of six), reconfiguring and enhancing the lighting in its parking lot off Dinsmore Road, and adding a playground.

After Thursday’s meeting, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board is next scheduled to convene on August 21.
