Know rules and regulations regarding 'informational,' campaign signage

Post Date:08/11/2025 3:42 PM
vote.here.sign.2021Where, how many, how big, and when might you see legal campaign signs around Milton?

To the last question: Political signs are allowed from the start of the candidate qualifying period – which, for the 2025 election cycle, is August 18 – to seven days after Election Day. In the case of a Runoff, the end-date is seven days after that happens.

During this period, you can place an unlimited number of “informational signs” (campaign signs included, with important qualifications) on parcels, including for commercial spaces, that do NOT have a residence on it. But different rules apply for residential lots, which have houses on them. For the latter, be mindful of these DOs and DON’Ts:

  • No sign can be larger than 4 square feet. (This is true for commercial properties as well.)
  • There cannot be any more than 12 square feet of total signage on residential lots.
  • These can be placed on private property only with the homeowner’s permission.
  • Signs must be outside the right-of-way, which is generally 15 feet or so from the curb/pavement’s edge.
  • No reflecting elements, (protruding) flags, or projections on signs.

In addition to the maximum size, any sign – whether it’s on a residential or commercial property – must comply with City Code. So that means no vulgarity or flashing neon or projectiles extending outward, for example. Also, no informational signs can be on City property.

Sign violations can be reported using SeeClickFix, the City program for reporting various issues. To do so, download the See Click Fix app on your phone (then search for Milton, Georgia) or submit a request online at https://seeclickfix.com/web_portal/YJmBQhCHALt7PChFT1DtNYhJ/report/category. City staff do not go onto people’s private property to remove signs; however, they may issue a notice to whoever owns a given lot if there’s a violation. Signs places in medians or in the middle of roundabouts will be immediately removed. All signs removed by the City will be available at City Hall for retrieval within five days.

Post-election (so by January, for sure), the “old”/non-election season rules will again apply. Nothing changes as far as “informational signs” (which may recognize your roofing company, celebrate your graduate, etc.) on residential lots. But the rules for such signs on non-residential lots do tighten up, with the exact details varying by zoning division.

Thank you for taking the time to know and comply with Milton’s signage regulations!
