On the surface and under it, the Morris Road widening-and-then-some project keeps making major progress.
Among the many recent highlights as of mid-September:
- Curb and gutter installations along the reconfigured roadway are roughly 50 percent complete.
- Similarly, roughly half of all underground reinforced concrete stormwater pipe (along with catch inlets) has been installed.
- Fire hydrants have been moved to accommodate the wider road.
The 70-foot extension of the 72-inch-radius reinforced concrete pipe culvert is now under the existing road along with a new headwall. (New roadway will be added towards the end of the project.)
- The 10-foot-wide concrete multi-use path – aimed at making this area more walkable (and as part of the Big Creek Greenway Connection) – has started going in.
- Crews are working to relocate the 24-foot watermain, which is needed to accommodate the width of the new roadway and the relocation of three water vaults.
- Also, the relocation of three power poles to accommodate the width of the roadway is nearly completed.
That amounts to many milestones met in recent weeks by the City contractors from Wilson Construction, though there’s still more to go.
Morris Road is being widened from its existing roundabout at Deerfield Avenue/Webb Road to McGinnis Ferry
Road (itself being widened slightly east of Bethany Bend). The plan is that everything should be finished by the end of 2026. This is going on as the Georgia Department of Transportation builds a new interchange to-and-from Georgia 400 at McGinnis Ferry Road. Once both projects are complete, this corridor will have consistent four lanes (two in each direction).
