Legacy Park parking, birds at MCPP and Lakhapani among PRAB agenda items

Post Date:12/17/2025 10:47 AM

Birdwatching groupThe Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meets Thursday to discuss plans to revamp the parking lot at Legacy Park, as well as to help make two nature parks prime destinations for birdwatchers.

The December 18 meeting will start at noon in City Hall’s Council Chambers (so not at 6 p.m., as is often the case). Citizens can watch in-person or online at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKvDX_yLqgk.

Known as PRAB, Milton’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Board consists of seven people who are appointed by the Mayor and Councilmembers. They advise City staff and leaders about matters related to park facilities, recreation activities, as well as related policies and programs.

Thursday’s meeting will begin, as is customary, with “Committee Reports” so PRAB can get the latest on the City of Milton’s recreation programs. These include affiliated sports leagues, art classes, camps, and nature-centered activities.

The Board will shift naturally, then, to two possible additions to this program roster. One could be a youth indoor recreational cheer Legacy Park parking lotprogram, while the other is a potential hip hop dance program for adults.

This will be followed by an update on planned Legacy Park improvements, specifically to its parking lot. The City plans in 2026 to increase capacity by adding more spaces along with steps aimed at improving traffic flow within the parking lot.

PRAB next will weigh-in on a possible Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the City and the Georgia Birding Trail Network. If ultimately approved, it would add Birmingham Park and Lakhapani Preserve to the Georgia Birding Trail. According to the Birds Georgia website, “This trail will highlight some of the state’s most spectacular birding locations [to tell] a story of birds, habitats, and the people who protect them.” More information can be found at https://www.birdsgeorgia.org/ga-birding-trail.html.

The agenda’s last “New Business” item would change one date – in November – on PRAB’s 2026 meeting schedule.

Thursday’s meeting will conclude with City Staff reports. PRAB will hear about the nearly complete work to expand and reshape elements in passive greenspace parts of Milton City Park and Preserve. These revamped areas, along with the current nature trail, are expected to open by the end of January.

Staff also will share that Birmingham Park’s next “Trail Cleanup Day” will be on February 28 between 8 and 11 a.m. The December 18 meeting will wrap up with a Community Outreach update that will touch on, among other things, several recent successful holiday events.

PRAB’s next scheduled meeting is on Thursday, January 15.
