A Girl & Her Dog at Birmingham Park-3Milton is poised to receive $200,000 through the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to fund a new restroom, bridge work, and trail improvements at Birmingham Park.

DNR recently announced that Milton is among 17 projects statewide selected for grants through the federally funded (and State administered) Recreational Trails Program. The process will continue in the coming months, with the funds expected to be available by year’s end. After they are, local governments will have up to 24 months to utilize them.

The $200,000 grant for Milton is tied for the highest amount awarded in this Recreational Trails Program grant cycle. The City will supplement this support, roughly Birmingham Park Trails kiosk_June 202350% of the anticipated project cost, with money that is set aside annually to pay specifically for Birmingham Park upgrades.

Situated on about 200 acres in northwest Milton, Birmingham Park long has served as a rustic, picturesque escape for those wishing to experience nature at its best. It features nine multi-use, natural trails beloved by outdoor enthusiasts, including equestrians and hikers.

The DNR grant will be used to make Birmingham Park even more accessible, safer, and all-around better for our community. Along with a new restroom building, the money will help pay for Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant parking by the park’s trailhead. A wooden bridge not far from that trailhead will be replaced, new signage will go up along the walking and equestrian trails, and two sections of the Yellow Trail will be rerouted in the interests of visitors’ safety.

“Birmingham Park’s natural beauty and charm are unmatched, and this project should only once enhance people’s enjoyment of it,” said Parks and Recreation Director Tom McKlveen. “Once it’s complete, the park will be even more family friendly, more convenient, and more enriching for our community.”
