trash truckThe Milton Sustainability Advisory Committee on Tuesday will look back to how the City earned gold-level Green Communities honors while looking forward to what should be in the City’s Recycling and Solid Waste Management Plan.

The April 21 meeting will begin at 5 p.m. in City Hall’s Council Chambers (2006 Heritage Walk). Anyone can attend in-person or watch online at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOvxZ01KqYk

Known as MSAC, the Milton Sustainability Advisory Committee works with City staff and leadership on environmental and sustainability-related issues and initiatives. The 7-member appointed committee’s primary focus in recent months has been helping shape Milton’s new Recycling and Solid Waste Management Plan (RSWMP).

That guiding document, once again, will be a focus of Tuesday’s meeting.  This 10-year plan will chart an optimal process and regulations for collecting and disposing of solid waste, which includes conventional trash and recyclable items. The RSWMP will not be paired with monetary investments or define new policies, but it may contain recommendations on both. You can learn more about it at www.miltonga.gov/RSWMP.

Committee members then will hear about the City’s Green Communities progress. Earlier this year, the Atlanta Regional Commission announced that Milton rose to “Gold” status for this program, which reviews and salutes local governments that demonstrate commitment to supporting and safeguarding the Green Communities Plaque 1environment.

Milton secured this honor after its application scored points on many fronts, such as:

  • Conducting energy audits at City facilities
  • Offering a range of recycling opportunities
  • Developing a long-term strategy for its greenspaces
  • Working to improve traffic signal synchronization (to reduce congestion and idling)
  • Communicating frequently on sustainability and environmental topics

You can learn more about the City’s milestone at https://www.miltonga.gov/Home/Components/News/News/3320/1351.

Tuesday’s meeting will conclude with updates from MSAC members on sustainability-related initiatives.

After this meeting, the Sustainability Advisory Committee is next scheduled to convene on May 12.
