GDOT delays Freemanville bridge closure, detour at City's request

Post Date:04/22/2026 3:47 PM
Freemanville bridge workAt the City’s request, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has pushed the upcoming closure of a Freemanville Road bridge back a few weeks – a small but critical change that means the detours won’t start until right after this school year ends.

The new expected closure date is now May 26. (Previously, GDOT had planned to start it on May 7. That State agency oversees all aspects of this project, with the City having no direct role beyond informing and advocating for citizens.)

Crews have been working around the site of the Freemanville bridge, which spans Cooper Sandy Creek south of Providence Road, for several months. Still, a total closure is needed because – given the findings of a GDOT inspection – the bridge will be replaced in total.

The closure, and related detour, is expected to last many months into the fall. That means it will be in effect once the 2026-2027 school year starts, though by then drivers should have had time to get more accustomed to the detour routes. Generally speaking, too, Milton roads tend to be less busy over the summer.

An informational open-house style event on this matter – which includes the related closure of Landrum Road – will be from 5:30-7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, inside City Hall.
