Equestrian Committee to discuss past, potential future ways to engage community

Kids on Ponies at Meet the Neighbors EventThe Milton Equestrian Committee meets Wednesday night to look back at its successful Meet the Neighbors event and look forward to two more potential, if very different, ways to engage the community.

The May 20 meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall’s Council Chambers. Members of the public are welcome to attend the meeting in-person or watch it online at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXcKDDhSOtk.

Known as MEC, the Milton Equestrian Committee consists of City Council-appointed individuals who consider matters of importance to the local equestrian community. They share their valuable advice, insights, and opinions on such topics with City staff and leadership.

There are three items on Wednesday’s agenda. The first is an opportunity to revisit Meet the Neighbors, which took place last month in the City’s pasture-filled, 21-acre greenspace at the intersection of Freemanville and Birmingham roads.

Hundreds attended this event, which focused on horses but also featured plenty of other farm animals. Meet the Neighbors also showcased booths of people selling horse-themed items and offering equestrian-related services. You can read more about it at https://www.miltonga.gov/Home/Components/News/News/3475/1351

MEC also will continue its discussion of a potential equestrian summer camp. This would not happen until summer 2027, at which point young people may have the opportunity to learn about riding horses on a Milton farm.

The meeting’s final agenda item pertains to a possible survey aimed at owners of horse farms and other large-lot properties. MEC members will discuss what might go into this survey, such as soliciting viewpoints on challenges they face as well as services and other possible measures the City could offer to incentivize the continued ownership (and potential growth) of large-lot properties.

After this meeting, the Milton Equestrian Committee is next scheduled to convene on June 17.
