As we approach Independence Day, now is the time to understand the DOs and DON’Ts when it comes to fireworks in Milton.

For many years, loud fireworks have been prohibited within Milton City limits except for a handful of days each year, including July 3 and 4 coming up. That’s still the case – with a major wrinkle. 

This stems from a new regulation, enacted in 2025 following State legislation, that prohibits any type of fireworks from being set off within 200 yards of the border of any property that’s home to equines (which includes horses) in Milton. As this map suggests, this covers quite a few lots in Milton where you shouldn’t detonate them at any time – July 4^th included. This restriction was enacted primarily to protect horses that instinctively bolt at the sound of big booms overhead, thus endangering themselves, other animals, people, and property. 

If you don’t live within such close proximity to horses, thundering fireworks (since it’s tied to a City ordinance barring “loud and unreasonable noise”) are allowed between 10 a.m. and midnight on July 3 and 4. After that, the next permissible opportunity to use them is Labor Day. 

If you’re not in a restricted area, please consider the potential negative impacts of fireworks on human (like veterans with PTSD who may be especially alarmed) and animal neighbors (including sensitive dogs, in addition to horses). At the very least, consider informing those who lives nearby – including potentially those on a horse farm that happens to be 300 yards or more away – well in advance of your personal fireworks show. That way, at least they can take precautions. 

Another thing to keep in mind are potential risks posed by fireworks. Responsible, sober, and aware adults only should set them off. If that’s not the case in any way, the likelihood increases of someone getting hurt or fires flaring nearby.
