The City of Milton is working closely with Fulton County Schools after receiving a notice from the Georgia Department of Transportation that a new weight limit restriction must be posted on a Thompson Road bridge.

The bridge spans a Chicken Creek tributary less than a half-mile north of Redd Road. A 10-ton weight limit was instituted in March 2026 following a routine GDOT inspection. Because most loaded school buses exceed that limit, Fulton County Schools adjusted several bus routes for the remainder of the 2025-2026 school year. The district did what it needed to do at the time to keep students safe and comply with the new restriction.

The City recognizes that this has created real inconvenience for some families, including longer travel times for students and increased potential for congestion along alternate routes. We also recognize that resolving or reducing these impacts before the next school year is a priority for the community.

City staff and Fulton County Schools have been discussing options this summer to reduce those impacts wherever possible. Those conversations include whether bus routes can be adjusted in a way that better minimizes added time and distance while still avoiding the restricted bridge.

At the same time, the City is evaluating potential ways to address the bridge restriction itself. That work includes reviewing the inspection findings, coordinating with GDOT, assessing whether any repair or reinforcement options could safely raise or eliminate the weight restriction, and considering longer-term bridge replacement options if necessary.

The shared goal is to reduce inconvenience for families while continuing to make safety the priority. The City will keep the community informed as this work progresses and as more specific information becomes available.
