Attendees of the City’s recent Independence Day event had plenty to learn and say about the future of Highway 9.

Last Friday’s all-American celebration may not have happened along this particular critical Milton thoroughfare (it centered around Broadwell Pavilion), but that didn’t stop a steady stream of people from expressing interest, sharing ideas, and gaining a better understanding of what’s coming over the next several years.

They made the most of a prime summer-time opportunity to engage a large number of people about this pivotal project. After all, every Milton resident drives along State Route 9 and stands to benefit from this effort being well-designed and well-executed.

Milton’s three-mile segment of this road runs between the Alpharetta border (at Windward Parkway) and Forsyth County line. It’s a State Route, meaning it falls under the purview of the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). In 2025, the City took over the day-to-day project management and delivery for this initiative.

This means that, while GDOT funds will pay for it, the City has the lead in the design that will involve some widening, building a raised median, reducing the speed limit, adding pedestrian walkways, upgrading intersections, and generally promoting a community-supported Milton feel.
