After making a difference in the lives of so many retirees, the Milton Senior Center’s longtime manager Karen Fowler is riding off into the sunset herself.

 

Representatives from the City’s Public Works, Communications, and Fire departments joined Senior Services North Fulton team members last week to help give Karen the grateful sendoff she deserves. Cake was eaten, praise was shared, smiles beamed – all in appreciation of a woman who gave her all to making lives better for area seniors socially, psychologically, mentally, and physically.

 

“The best part of the job was engaging with lovely people every day,” Karen said of the men and women who made the Milton Senior Center their second home. “They share their stories, and they’re interested in hearing ours. You get to know them and their families.”

 

Karen’s service began 11 years ago as a volunteer. She was an assistant when the Milton Senior Center opened in the City-owned and maintained Thomas S. Byrd House. Two weeks later, the Manager positioned opened up – and Fowler stepped in.

 

She’s since shaped the quaint, historic place into somewhere people form friendships, learn skills, and find meaning. Whether it’s sharing a meal, taking a class, or simply chatting with new friends and old, every moment matters. And all of us in the City who worked with her always appreciated her dedication, her helpfulness, and her intent on always putting her seniors’ interests first.
