The City of Milton was incorporated on December 1, 2006 -- about 11 months after State Rep. Jan Jones introduced a bill in the state legislature to create the new City, and just over four months after 85 percent of residents voted in favor of forming Milton. At the time of its founding, the City adopted Fulton County ordinances and its then limited staff worked out of rented spaces. Since then, Milton has continually shaped its identity -- including creating and retooling its own City Code, developing its own programs and moving into City-owned properties such as its one-of-a-kind City Hall, which opened in 2017.

Are there fees associated with paying taxes online or by phone?

Can I burn yard waste?
Georgia's "Burn Ban" runs from May 1 through September 30. During this time, the State's Environmental Protection Division issues the prohibition on open burning to help curb fires fueled by dry conditions and improve overall air quality. The ban covers 54 Georgia counties -- including Fulton County, which includes Milton.

Specific to Milton, burning in non-agricultural areas - in other words, plots that aren't agriculturally zoned -- is always prohibited. So is burning treated wood, garbage, construction debris, and other non-vegetative items. The only exceptions are small fires for the immediate consumption of food and small campfires. This is true year-round.

In agricultural areas (i.e. zoned AG1), after May 1:
- Open burning is allowed for production or harvesting crops on lots 5 acres or less.
- For larger tracts (more than 5 acres), open burning is allowed for existing, expanded, or new agricultural operations.
These two exemptions, however, may be rescinded if there is a high fire danger rating on any given day. The Milton Fire-Rescue Department has the authority to prohibit and extinguish any unsafe fire in the city.

From October 1 through April 30, outdoor burning of small piles of residential debris in Milton may be allowed depending on the fire danger rating for the day.

Can I water whenever I want?

For the most part, no. The Georgia Water Stewardship Act went into effect statewide on June 2, 2010. It allows daily outdoor watering for purposes of planting, growing, managing, or maintaining ground cover, trees, shrubs, or other plants only between the hours of 4 p.m. and 10 a.m. by anyone whose water is supplied by a water system permitted by the Environmental Protection Division. There are some exceptions, however.

Do I use Milton as my mailing address?

Yes. Nearly all of Milton is located within the 30004 zip code, meaning postal workers will know to deliver the mail to the correct address. In addition, the City is added every day to popular mapping and database networks, meaning more accurate representation for city residents.
Does the City of Milton have a notary public?

Effective September 23, 2019, city staff will only provide notary services for official city documents.
Does the City offer garbage collection services?

No. A number of private vendors registered with the city provide garbage collection. A list can be found here.
How can I find where my septic tank is located?

Septic tank permits are issued by the Fulton County Health Department (North Fulton office), located at 3155 Royal Drive in Alpharetta. The phone number is 404-332-1801.
How can I run for public office or volunteer?

For those wishing to serve in public office, you must declare your intent to run during the election cycle at the City Clerk’s office.

If you wish to formally volunteer with a city-sponsored board or committee, please contact your city council member as they appoint members. For informal volunteer opportunities, please fill out this online form.
How do I hook up my utilities?

Water and sewer service is handled by Fulton County, unless you have a septic tank (generally in use for lots one acre and over), in which case you will simply need water and should schedule septic maintenance on your own.

How do I know if my property is within the City of Milton limits?

If my property is in Milton, do I still pay property taxes to Fulton County?

Yes, all property owners in Milton also pay property taxes to Fulton County (includes taxes to Fulton County School System and State of Georgia). These property tax bills will continue to come from the Fulton County Tax Commissioner's Office. The City of Milton will send out the city tax bills separately.
What is the phone number of City Hall?

You may dial 678-242-2500 to speak with a representative of Milton’s government. From there, the receptionist will direct you to the correct department to answer your inquiry.
What is the population of Milton?

Milton has a population of more than 39,000, according to federal estimates.
What is the public school system for Milton?

Milton’s residents are served by Fulton County School System. To see the school your child will attend based on your address, call the Student Placement Service for The Fulton County Board of Education at 404.763.6801.
Where do I register to vote?

In an effort to make it easier for the Citizens of Milton to register to vote, several staff members at City Hall recently completed voter registration training through the Voter Education and Outreach Program.

Where is City Hall?

City Hall is located at 2006 Heritage Walk, Milton, GA 30004, one block off of Crabapple Road in downtown Milton. Normal business hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Where is the closest post office?

The closest post office is located in Alpharetta at 2400 Old Milton Parkway. The phone number is 770-442-3893. The City’s government does not have authority to establish a post office for Milton — the decision is left to the United States Postal Service, based on their service strategies.
Where is the local recycling center?

Where is the Milton Police Department located?

Milton’s police headquarters is a located at 13690 Highway 9, in the Public Safety Complex. You may visit from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Who do I call in an emergency?

Always call 911 in an emergency situation. If within the cities of Milton , your call will be routed to C3, the shared dispatch hub for Milton and Alpharetta emergency calls, located in Alpharetta police headquarters on Old Milton Parkway. Milton’s police and fire departments will then respond, if needed. Alpharetta units may also respond based on who is closer.
Who do I call to report streetlight outage?

The City of Milton does not provide utility services to its residents. There are three electricity providers servicing the City's residents. Reporting streetlight outages should be directed to the utility provider of record for that area/neighborhood. The first step in determining which of the three utility providers below should be contacted is to first consider which utility provider services your personal residence. If the outage is outside your neighborhood, you can contact the providers in order of their listing below to see if this location is serviced by that provider.
