The Georgia Department of Natural Resources announced in spring 2026 that a City of Milton project to improve Birmingham Park was one of 17 selected statewide for grants through a federally funded (and State administered) grant program. The $200,000 grant would pay for roughly half the cost of the overall project, with the remainder coming from a pool of money set aside for years specifically for Birmingham Park upgrades.

All aspects of this project are rooted in recommendations made in community-driven, City Council-approved plans. These include the Comprehensive Parks and Recreation Master Plan as well as the Milton Community Trails Prioritization Plan. Its components are:

• Erecting a prefabricated restroom (like the one at Providence Park) near the park’s trailhead
• Expanding the parking lot by about 15 spots, all but two of them (for ADA-compliant spots) being gravel
• Rerouting two trail segments to make them safer
• Planting bushes in a steeply graded area alongside a portion of one trail
• Replacing a small bridge to help prevent stream erosion
