 Updated 9.17.2025 Preliminary Concept Layout

Sign.with.school.and.lightThe City is looking to improve safety and alleviate congestion in the southern portion of Birmingham Highway. And we want to hear from our citizens first before finalizing any productive plans.

As is standard for Milton transportation projects, the City will take a multi-faceted, multi-step, well-informed approach. This includes collecting data and actively soliciting input from citizens, since they are the ones most familiar with this stretch of roadway and experience it firsthand on a regular basis.

Birmingham Highway is a state route – specifically, State Route 372 – so the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) must review and approve any final design improvements. That said, GDOT is allowing the City to take the lead in this process in coordination with Fulton County Schools knowing how important it is for our community.

Focus Area

Those who have spent time driving on a weekday morning or mid-afternoon around State Route 372 near Milton High School, Northwestern Middle School, and Crabapple Crossing Elementary School know it is not always ideal. Traffic can get backed up (including to the Heritage Walk roundabout) to the frustration of drivers, young walkers and bikers can face challenges safely reaching where they need to go, and first responders could be delayed getting to emergencies because of congestion.

This project focuses on the Birmingham Highway portion of that corridor, specifically from the roundabout at Heritage Walk to just north of Milton High as well as adjacent intersections.

Public Outreach

Attendees Pointing Faces VisibleProject team members held an open-door open house on this project on September 18, 2025. Residents came by anytime in that window to view the preliminary concept layout, ask the project team questions, as well as share their thoughts on what should be done to improve that part of Birmingham Highway. For a recap of this Open House, CLICK HERE.

Citizens will have other opportunities to engage throughout this process. This may Heritage Roundabout School businclude attending (and sharing their comments at) City Council meetings when this project is discussed, or simply completing and submitting the form at the bottom of this webpage. Throughout the process, City staff will coordinate with Fulton County Schools. (And, again, any project design must be reviewed and approved by GDOT.)

Questions and Answers

#Parents and KidsWho has the final say over this project? Since it is a State Route, the Georgia Department of Transportation has final determination over what can and cannot be done to Birmingham Highway. Still, the City is playing an integral role to help drive the process and produce workable concepts.

Why are we pursuing this project? Quite simply, that part of Birmingham Highway too often gets congested around school drop-off and pick-up times. There are also safety concerns for those who walk/drive to-and-from schools, not to mention how excess traffic can hamper police officers and firefighters responding to public safety emergencies.

Ultimately, how will any improvements be paid for? The expectation is Milton’s TSPLOST funding will over transportation improvement expenses.

What types of improvements are possible? Potential improvements include extended and new turn lanes, raised medians, wider entry/exit routes, wider sidewalks, and safer pedestrian crossings.

Is Fulton County Schools aware and working with the project team on this? Yes, Fulton County Schools is aware of this project and coordination has begun. Some of the possible changes, in fact, may involve parts of FCS property.
