The City of Milton's Geographic Information Systems (GIS) department, in partnership with the Milton Historical Society, produced a GIS story map that allows people to explore Milton's rich history. Along with offering glimpses at historic images, you can use this interactive map to view historical marker details and stories about Milton's historic locations and buildings.
One of Milton's most historical locations is the Thomas Byrd Sr. House -- formerly known as the Hopewell House -- located at 15690 Hopewell Road. The structure is one of the oldest in North Fulton, dating back to at least the mid-1800s. The City of Milton purchased the 2.5-acre property from foreclosure in 2011, then a few years later renovated the nearly 4,000-square-foot home on it. That building is now home to Milton's Senior Center, run by North Fulton Senior Services in partnership with the City of Milton.
Another historic structure is the McConnell-Chadwick House, which you can learn more about by clicking HERE. Located along what's now Arnold Mill Road near the Little River, this home's first occupant was Eli McConnell -- a Brigadier General in the State militia, a State Senator who advocated for the creation of Milton County, builder of the area's first merchant flour mill, and the governor's designee to sell personal property of departed Cherokee Indians. The one-story, Greek revival cottage home built for him and his family around 1840 features a brick chimney and clapboard siding, along with a nearby wellhouse.
